And the list is growning -- click here to read on!
| "I honestly cant even believe we have to make a list to express to people that these devices cause pain and therefore are an inhumane way of training. "
"Humans have been effectively training animals for hundreds of years without shock collars - no need for them. Unacceptable and unnessesary to hurt dogs to train them!"
"As someone who has owned dogs for the last twenty-five years, I do not believe in something that would "hurt" an animal into submission. A good trainer should be able to teach a dog without scaring them into doing what is expected of them."
"Despite advances in behavioural research there is a widespread use by dog owners / 'trainers' with little or no behavioural background or experience to implement punishment based methods. Not only does aversive (pain producing) stimuli carry considerable risk for abuse, but it fails to address the fact that the undesirable behaviour is occuring because it is being reinforced - either intentionally or unintentionally.
That such methods exist today and are employed in the name of dog training is a blemish on the profession. I believe this says more about human behaviour than it does about dogs."
"We know that there are humane ways to train animals - let's use them and not put the animal through unnecessary pain."
"Shock collars are cruel, especially in the wrong hands. which is where they usually end up because they are so widely andreadily available. They are advertised as a "quick fix training tool" and need to be taken off the market. It is not even that the owners themselves are cruel, but they may not know where to start and will turn to what is available and what is familiar. This is not fair to the dogs. This cruel tool needs to be removed from shelves, and if it must be sold- should only be sold to people who are informed on how to use it appropriately. Perhaps a required class? "
"It seems to be a barbaric way to train a dog. I believe only people with a total lack of understanding of dog behaviour would resort to using these collars and I would like to see an absolute ban on their use."
"Shock Collars are banned in Germany, but its not forbidden to buy them. So they are still in use - in most cases even without any instruction, which makes it even worse, if that is possible."
"Respect your dog. That means: find ways to work with your dog that show this respect. Shock collars show no respect, no immagination, just frustration and a total lack of interest in what your dog really needs."
"Hi, have recently completed a dog trainers course where the shock collar was and its uses were explained extensively definitely should not be in the hands of the general pet owners at all."
"As a dog walker, pet parent and head of a local Dog Owners Association, I'm happy to help spread the word that positive training methods are the best and most effective way to train your companion animal. There is simply no need for the use of aversives, especially shock collars. I'm happy to sign this on behalf of myself and my business partner at "gentle guide" canine services. www.gentleguide.net"
"What you put into your dog you will get back, love and kindness goes a long way, I have two beautiful dogs who I adore and the thought of anything like this used on them is unthinkable."
"With all the amazing results being obtained through positive training nowadays, I can't see any excuse for people to buy these cruel devices. Better to invest the money in a really good behaviourist!"
"Electric Shock Collars have no place in dog training and controlling dog behaviour. It is easy to go online and find a positive dog trainer or training school in most areas. Or simply get advice by phone if access is a problem. This is the 21st century not the dark ages where everyone learnt through fear and pain. Let us all strive for kindness and support for all living creatures."
"We all know there are so many ways to achieve behaviour that is lasting and enjoyable for both the dog and owner - there is no need for such ridiculous tools. (anyone who puts this sort of device on a dog should try it first on themselves!!!) "
"No human should have the right, the power or the desire to treat another living creature in an inhumane and disrespectful way."
"The use of electric shock collars is barbaric and outdated. There are so many more, dog-friendly, humane methods outthere now. Why would we be encouraging humans to continue being cruel and direspectful to animals; there is enough going on out there as it is. If a dog or any animal does not listen to you or is misbehaving, then you need to look at the bigger picture and try to work out why, not shock it into obeying. We don't do that to our children, our employees, friends and families so there is no reason for it to be used against dogs and animals. Shock collars must be banned. "
"I am a dog rescuer - pretty much Labs & there is no way I will ever allow one of my rescued animals go to home with an electric fence. All of my adopted dogs & puppies MUST go to an obedience class using ONLY Positve Reinforcement Methods with a certified trainer. No shock, pinch, choke collars are allowed. Contracts are signed & must be abided by or I WILL take the dog back."
"Thank you so much for "doing" something big about this horrible problem. I've argued 'till I'm blue in the face on "training" lists against the usage of electric shock on our beloved dogs. I look forward to having my name on an list that to take a firm stand with others who feel that shocking companion animals is a travesty perpetrated on our loyal, unsuspecting, beautiful dogs by business interests, rather than dog interests. "
"Anyone who understands how dogs learn and how they view the environment knows that shock collars are completely unnecessary. There are more effective, pain free, ways to shape behavior. Just as notable, however, is that they are inhumane and abusive tools that should be flying off shelves into the garbage dump rather than around the necks of our beloved pets."
"We are deeply concerned with the use of shock collars used for training and behavior modification. The average pet owners is just not aware of the great potential hard to their loving pet. "
"Thank you so much for taking action on this heartbreaking problem. I look forward to having my name on a list in order to take a firm stand with others who feel that shocking companion animals is a travesty perpetrated on our loyal, unsuspecting, beautiful dogs by business interests, rather than dog interests. "
"I can think of no reason why these things should be legal. Recently, a father was arrested for using shock collars on his children and the charges were "criminal mistreatment". So, if it's criminal mistreatment to use them on a child, why is it ok to use them on animals who also feel and react to the pain?"
"Thank you for this list! It is well past time for all punitive "training" to come to an end."
"I firmly take a stand AGAINST the use of Shock Collars for the sake the dogs! Who do we think we are to use such outdated training devices on an animal who cannot speak for themself! How shameful!"
"As a CPDT, and a trainer that made the mistake of attending an instructors school that regularly uses this type of equipment, I applaud your efforts to eliminate this particular device."
"I cannot conceive of using such a cruel, barbaric device. It's completely unnecessary. It's important to build the human-animal bond, not potentially destroy it."
